SRINAGAR: Months back Social media was brimming with allegations that Shehla Rashid embezzled the money crowdfunded for the family of the Kathua rape victim which has now been exposed as fake by Huffington Post India.
It wasn’t the first time that any person or organisation has became victim of such fake allegations but in past it was a tool for some people to defame others.
According to Huffington Post they used website registry records and interviewed one current and one former employee of an organisation and established that a webportal and its Facebook page, are managed by third party who according to Huffington Post had earlier posted fake news about Shehla Rashid.
In November 2018, a Facebook post claiming that money donated to the family of an eight-year-old Muslim girl, who was brutally gang-raped and murdered, had been stolen by Shehla Rashid which was again patently a false claim.
In May 2018, when the Karnataka state elections were in full swing, fact-checking website BOOM Live identified a number of websites posing as news outlets.
These sites, “peddled political propaganda” and posted “inflammatory content” directed by some politicians even a website published multiple articles with fake survey results that were attributed to fictitious polling agencies.
According to sources, the crowd funded money was transferred to the account of victims family and they used the same money for fighting the case in court.
Sources said that Shehla Rashid and her team were falsely accused of pocketing money crowdfunded for Kathua/Unnao victims’ family which was a preplanned target on the Team of some Social Workers.
When Valley Online contacted Shehla Rashid about the Crowdfunding she said “In the past some parents of victims were pressurised by various quarters, we did not want Kathua victims family to be pressurised by anyone, that’s why we made them financially independent.”
She added that “it wasn’t one day plan they (Shehla & her team) will continue to help such families in future as well.”
“She has been a victim of fake news because people want to target her politically, but I think Shehla will never surrender” a member of her team told Valley Online.
She added that it was Shehla Rashid who didn’t took rest for several days and she was the only woman who reached to the family several times because a female can realise the pain of a mother, a sister.
