Malala Yousafzai “an inspiration for all the teenagers” Reem Sameer Sheikh
MUMBAI: TV teen actress Reem Sameer Sheikh, who you have seen in soaps like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha Season 2, is all set to play Pakistani activist and Nobel winner Malala Yousafzai in the upcoming biopic ‘Gul Makai’.
This Mumbai teen actress has trained hard to portray Malala authentically on screen and is of course excited for her full fledge role.
We spoke with this beautiful TV teenager actress who considers herself lucky to play the role of Malala Yousafzai who is a global icon for all the teenagers around the world and also her ongoing visit to Kashmir-Paradise on Earth.
VO: What was your reaction when you got this offer to play the role of Malala Yousafzai ?
RS: “I was very happy and overwhelming when I got this role to play such an amazing personality Malala Yousafzai who herself is role model for all the teenagers and she is global icon. I was shortlisted among 200 girls… and the best thing was when director selected me after my talent.”
VO: How did director Amjad Khan spotted you for this role…did he saw your serials ?
RS: “The director came to know about me through one of our mutual friends and before the meeting he had done lots of research on my previous works. He was kind of impressed with my work.”
VO: Have you attended any workshop for such a challenging role ?
RM: “ Yes! I got a workshop for proper diction of Malala, about her family, her mannerism; her way of talk and also personal front as well I did lots of research on her through google, YouTube. There was other people as well who were helping me especially my dad who use to tell me about her.”
VO: Any chance of meeting Malala Yousafzai in future ?
RM: “I would love to meet her and while doing this role I feel positive vibes of meeting such a great personality and there are plans as well let’s see. Her life is such an inspiration.
VO: Have you learned her local language ?
RS: “Yes.. Uske liye workshop kiya tha… as over there they speak Urdu and Poshtun. For that I had lots of training. Its proper Hindi mix Urdu. It was not that much difficult because Urdu I use to speak. Urdu and Poshtun are little similar.”
VO: How is it working with your on screen mother Divya Dutta?
RS: “I was quite nervous to work with her because she does all her scenes so flawlessly and very down to earth. I admire her acting.
VO: How is working with Atul Kulkarni ?
RS: ”He plays role of my father in the film and most of the scenes are with him as Malala in real life is very close to her father. It’s fun to work with him as well.
VO: Which scene in the film was challenging ?
RS: ”When I (Malala) was shot that scene was really…….. it’s quite emotional scene.
VO: Which is your favourite quote of Malala ?
RS: ”One Child, One Teacher, One Pen And One Book” can change the world which she spoke at the United Nations after she was shot. All her quotes are quite inspiring especially her interview talks with Emma Watson.”
VO: How’s working with director Amjad Khan ?
RS: ”He is very pro active director, very creative, handles camera as well. He writes and sings songs as well. He is very multi talented.”
VO: Which is your favourite Bollywood actor/actress ?
RS: It keeps changing but currently I like Varun Dhavan and Alia Bhatt, while acting wise I like Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor-Khan.
VO: How was your experience during shooting in Kashmir ?
RS: ”It was amazing to such a lovely place and at the same time it was very cold, I went to Shikara ride, food is awesome especially Kashmiri Wazwan which I enjoyed and I also went to Pari Mahal.. such a beautiful place. I was planning to visit Gulmarg as well but unfortunately couldn’t go.
Last July I had come to Kashmir for an Ad Shoot for only three days so really couldn’t explore but this time was here for 20 days. I went to Shankaracharya temple, Hazhratbal Dargah. Its very peaceful place I sat there for half an hour. I visited many gardens as well.”
VO: How are locals (people) of Kashmir Valley ?
RS: ”They are very helpful and kind people. Kabhi bhi khane ki jagah puchoo, they will help you and not annoying. They offer you help which you don’t get to see anywhere.
VO: What are your future projects ?
RM: There are few ones lined up lets see.”
