Karan Nagar gunfight underway, LeT claims responsibility
SRINAGAR: The gunfight between militants and government forces which started in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar city was underway, police sources said on Monday.
A CRPF soldier was killed and a police cop was injured in the gunfight which started in the business centre of the summer capital.
Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) has claimed the responsibility of the Karan Nagar attack.
“The freedom fighters of Lashkar-e-Taiba continue to seize control of the stronghold in Karan Nagar (Srinagar). If India has any guts to face the Mujahideen, we invite you to fight! But we believe that it is the worst coward military army in the world,” Lashkar chief said in a statement issued to Srinagar based news agency.
Militants armed with weapons were seen moving near CRPF camp in Karan Nagar around 4:30 am, CRPF PRO said.
However, a CRPF soldier fired on them prompting them to take refuge in a nearby building, he added.
“Immediately search operation in the camp periphery was launched,” CRPF PRO Rajesh Yadav said.
The officer said that after several hours of search operation the militants were traced in a nearby building and accordingly an exchange of gunfire started between the two sides.
The gunfight was going on when reports last came in.
The gunfight comes two days after militants attacked an army camp in Jammu area killing five soldiers. A civilian was also killed in the attack.
